Split Creek Farm Gets Another "A"

Split Creek Farm’s goat milk feta received a perfect score of 100 and was awarded for being the highest scoring cheese in the competition for the American Dairy Goat Association annual meeting. The judging and the convention were held October 10 -17 in Buffalo, NY. It is only the second time a cheese was awarded a perfect score in an ADGA competition. The first time was in Madison, WI in 1994 and was won by Split Creek Farm’s Almond Apricot cheeseball. Split Creek Farm, located in Anderson, SC, is a Grade A goat dairy and cheese processing plant. Antique Shopping in Pendleton SC

Our little town of Pendleton South Carolina is really coming to life with the addition of the new shops in town. We now have 8 Antique Shops plus other quaint shops to make it a fun filled day strolling the green and beyond. I can visualize folks coming to spend the whole day shopping, dining, and touring. Antique Shopping in Pendleton SC will be good for all the businesses and good for our town. I visited each of these shops while working on my latest lens and I have to tell you that it is Southern Charm at its best in Pendleton. I had to pull myself away in order to have the time to get to each of the shops to shoot videos and pictures. I could have spent hours in each of them finding treasures from the past.

Pendleton also has 5 Restaurants around our town square which offer delicious lunches for your shopping spree. The new Mexican Restaurant, Vaqueros, is a great addition to our town. We recently had dinner there and I was also there for lunch on their first day to open. Of course, we had been to their other restaurant in Clemson, Fiesta Grill, so already knew that it would be good. I really like the new look and the service was excellent. The Islander Pub & Grille offers some super lunches with my favorite being the Pineapple Chicken Salad. Their sandwiches are also very good. 1826 On The Green does a fine job of being Pendleton's Front Porch. There is nothing like sitting at one of the lovely tables outside and enjoy people watching. Of course, a scrumptious lunch is also available. Pendleton Cafe and Coffees is a real treat as you can enjoy an Art Exhibit and Music at the same time you enjoy a wide assortment of lunch choices. I had lunch with friends this week at the Village Baker and the Quiche was wonderful and the chocolate cake that I had for dessert was to die for. Avenue of Oaks opens on the Square

Avenue of Oaks opened at 150 Exchange Street on the square in Pendleton SC. It is a beautiful shop filled with a wide variety of antiques, collectibles, and gifts. I especially enjoyed seeing their Byers Carolers and will be returning to purchase one for myself.

Colonial Square Antique Mall

The new Colonial Square Antique Mall will be opening around September 8, 2009 and will be in Scott Ward's building better known as the Old Quattlebaum Building where Pendleton Antique Co. used to be. We are sure looking forward to it's opening. Owner Joshua B. Raffini

reports that the vendors will be moving in and setting up their spaces in a couple of weeks. He is also working on a website which should be up and running soon.

It is really an exciting time for Pendleton as new shops open their doors. Twelve Oaks Antiques is already open on Exchange Street and The Bridal and Formal Wear Shop has plans to open the first of September.

Everyone is anxiously awaiting the opening of the Mexican Restaurant which will be SOON according to the sign.

All of this is positive news for our little town and I hope everyone will make a point to personally welcome these new businesses.

Pendleton Flower Shop Closes It's Doors

I don't like change so the closing of Pendleton Flower Shop has been hard for me. I enjoyed this shop being on the square for many reasons but the number one reasons are Karen Link and her sister Kim Beck. Karen actually did the flowers for my wedding 31 years ago but she did not open her own shop until years later. When Karen first opened Pendleton Flower Shop on the square, I had a business on the square, too. We had more fun back in those days visiting back and forth, helping each other, and promoting our businesses together. I remember that we had a newsletter "Strolling On The Green" and can just hear the laughs we had as we would try to come up with interesting articles. We all supported each other and promoted each other's business. If I needed a baby gift, wedding gift, flower arrangement, or lunch I would not go any further than our Pendleton Town Square. I still try to do that.

I also remember the children that were raised around the square and we called them the "square kids" and we were all "square friends". We celebrated each other's birthdays with fun parties in our shops. We sure had fun! We had lots of "inside jokes" that were told over and over again. After my partners and I closed our business, I continued to pop in on Karen and Kim as often as I could or either give them a call whether I needed anything or not. I just liked having them around and knowing they were there.

Karen will continue to do weddings and home decor from her home but the shop on the square is now closed. Like I said, I don't like change so forgive me if I sound down and out about this. Yes, Pendleton will move forward and another business will take it's place but I will always remember Pendleton Flower Shop and two very special sisters: Karen and Kim

Memories of Days Gone By

I really enjoy writing about my hometown of Pendleton SC. We are a very small historic town nestled in the foothills of upstate South Carolina. It is the people who make Pendleton such an interesting place to live and an excellent place to raise a family. I had reconnected with someone from my past when she saw a post on Face Book about my Pendleton Old Photos. She contacted me and after several email conversations, I realized that her family was the one that had purchased our home when we moved from Pendleton to Scottsboro, Alabama in 1963. My dad was with J.P. Stevens Co, a textile firm, and was transferred only 3 months after our folks had built what they called their Retirement Home. This person, Jeanie Sims Hunt , was a couple of years younger than me but I did remember her and she was so interested in the history of Pendleton and was sharing her memories from the 50's and 60's through her emails. I realized that she was a very talented writer so I suggested that she seriously write down her Pendleton Memories and I would make a lens about it. We both started getting excited about the possibility of asking other Pendleton folks to do the same. It was about that time that I was asked to speak to the 2009 Leadership Pendleton Class as part of the Future Module talking about social media. At that meeting I heard the speakers for the Past Module and was so impressed with them. One was Sandra Gantt who told about growing up as a black female in Pendleton during the 50's and 60's. Another speaker was 94 year old Nell Seawright Reeves telling about growing up in Pendleton in the 20's and 30's. I later mentioned to both of them about using their speeches to be a part of our Pendleton Memories Series. They both agreed and so now I have 4 lenses including a lensography Pendleton Memories - A Series and am looking forward to other Pendletonians contributing their memories. All three of these lenses are so different and interesting. This project continues to be an education for me.

All of these lenses show what it was like in days gone by: Businesses that used to be on and off the square and the people who ran them. What kind of memories are you making for someone with your business?

Jeanie enjoyed our project so much that she joined Squidoo and created Life In My Grandmother's Time as her first lens. She followed this with the continuing story of her daughter, Audrey, who was a foster child. Jeanie has now published her continuation of Audrey's Story with Growing, Not Under My Heart, But Within Part 2.

The Pendleton District Commission's Curator has become interested in this series and want to archive each of them as part of their Pendleton Historic Collection.
